Who: Jim Jones, the Dipset capo and one time all-around loose cannon from Harlem. The first time I recall seeing Jim Jones he was committing a felony inside a Korean owned convenience store with The Game by his side. Jones’ reenactment of the seminal scene from Menace II Society in the “Certified Gangstas” video was short on acting prowess but long on genuine charisma and authentic threat. I remember wondering what part of Los Angeles this skinny pig-tailed kid called home but then not being surprised at all when I found out that he was actually from Uptown NYC. That, in a sense, was Jim Jones’ greatest musical talent: the ability to morph into any reality (West Coast gangsta, Down South crunk, Chi-Town drill) and still come out smelling like an NYC subway platform. He stopped by The Breakfast Club on Friday Sept. 12th. Here are the minute by minute highlights.
Who: Childish Gambino, the LA based, ATL bred multi-tasker who currently stands comfortably as America’s second favorite light-skinned TV actor turned rapper. What would Gambino have to do to overtake Drizzy, you ask? Well, I would compare it to the Biggie/Jay-Z situation that existed in 1997. Biggie was arguably the biggest rapper in the world and certainly the king of New York. Jay was a six foot two shadow dancer with one great album that didn’t sell and career prospects that aspired to perhaps AZ levels…at best. Then Biggie died. New York needed a king. Jay embraced the idea of hit-making as if it was one of Beyonce’s breastesses. And the rest is history.
Who: Jhene Aiko, the LA-bred semi-folksy alternative r&b songstress who aims to become America’s next great Blasian pop princess, after Amerie. I wonder, if you were to tell Jhene Aiko today that she was destined to have the same career path as Amerie (a coupla hits here and there followed by an elongated existence on that pop princess tier approximately 800 levels below Beyonce and Katy Perry) would she continue to trudge along or would she pack up her shit and go enroll at ITT Tech? I wish she had been asked this question when she stopped by The Breakfast Club on Monday Sept. 8th , but she wasn’t. Anyway, here are the minute by minute highlights.
